RESUMO

The nasopalatine region is composed of structures such as the vomeronasal organ and nasopalatine duct. The nasopalatine duct may provide the communication of the mouth to the nasal cavity in human fetuses and can be obliterated in an adult human. Knowledge on the development of the nasopalatine region and nasopalatine duct in humans is necessary for understanding the morphology and etiopathogenesis of lesions that occur in this region. Objective The aim of the present study was to describe the morphological aspects of the nasopalatine region in human fetuses and correlate these aspects with the development of pathologies in this region. Material and Methods Five human fetuses with no facial or palatine abnormalities were used for the acquisition of specimens from the nasopalatine region. After demineralization, the specimens were histologically processed. Histological cuts were stained with methylene blue to orient the cutting plane and hematoxylin-eosin for the descriptive histological analysis. Results The age of the fetuses was 8.00, 8.25, 9.00 and 9.25 weeks, and it was not possible to determine the age in the last one. The incisive canal was observed in all specimens as an opening delimited laterally by the periosteum and connecting oral and nasal cavity. The nasopalatine duct is an epithelial structure with the greatest morphological variation, with either unilateral or bilateral occurrence and total patent, partial patent and islet forms. The vomeronasal organ is a bilateral epithelized structure located alongside the nasal septum above the incisive canal in all the fetuses. Conclusions The incisive canal, nasopalatine duct and vomeronasal organ are distinct anatomic structures. The development of nasopalatine duct cysts may occur in all forms of the nasopalatine duct. .

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To present a case and discuss the clinicopathological characteristics of nasopalatine duct cyst and discuss the etiology, diagnosis, treatment and prognosis, with a review of the literature. DISCUSSION: Nasopalatine duct cyst occurs in approximately 1% of the population. Presentation may be asymptomatic or include swelling, pain, and drainage from the hard palate. Surgical treatment was carried out under local anesthesia and comprised the dissection and removal of the cyst adopting a usually palatine approach.

To study the spectrum of inflammatory and developmental odontogenic cysts. Epithelial lined cysts of the oral cavity are among the most commonly encountered oral diseases from both the clinicians and pathologists perspective. To reach a specific diagnosis a multi team approach is necessary which includes radiologists, surgeons and pathologists. Two major categories of cysts exist; odontogenic and non-odontogenic. The most commonly encountered odontogenic cysts are radicular or periapical cyst; which may occur in any age group but common in 3[rd] and 4[th] decade. The second common type is dentigerous cyst that accounts for 17% of all the odontogenic cysts. Keratocysts account for 10% of all odontogenic cyst and can have more chances of recurrence. 60 cases sent to the Pathology Department during Sept. 2006 to Dec 2009 were included in the study, after observing inclusion and exclusion criteria. After gross examination the sections were routinely processed and slides stained with Hand E. All the slides were thoroughly examined by two consultant histopathologists and postgraduate pathology resident. 50% were radicular cysts, 36% were dentigerous cysts, keratocysts and eruption cysts accounted for 8% and 5% respectively. In one case of dentigerous cyst ameloblastoma was diagnosed and one case was diagnosed at maxillary antrum, an unusual site for dentigerous cysts

RESUMO

Nonodontogenic cysts have been identified at various locations in oral cavity. These occur primarily in relation to fusion of maxillary process either with its counterpart or different portions of nasal part of frontonasal process. Usually solitary, these primarily affect maxilla alone; can rarely be seen in ramus of mandible. We present a case of multiple non-odontogenic cysts involving both maxilla and mandible.
